12 LIGHTING CINEXPERIENCE

12/2023
Academic Work

Type:  Immersive Cinema Design

Cinemas seamlessly merge art and technology, with light serving as the keystone that shapes visual experiences. In this context, lighting acts as an artistic conductor, manipulating texture, brightness, angle, and color to mold character features, illustrate emotional atmospheres, and drive narrative development.

Beyond the screen, lighting plays an equally vital role in shaping moods, defining spatial atmospheres, and distinguishing spaces. "LightingCineXperience" delves into the intricate interaction between individuals, emotions, space, and film. It envisions cinema spaces designed with modular lighting and architectural elements that respond to narrative, genre, and emotional tone. This project seeks to redefine traditional cinema experiences by using lighting dynamically to shape and enhance audience emotions.

In joyful film settings, the project employs elevated ceilings, smooth curves, and vibrant yellow lights to evoke happiness. For films that are sad or mysterious, a combination of rugged cement walls, lowered ceilings, and purple lighting creates a more oppressive ambiance. Thrilling films are enhanced with a sharp projection screen, strategic spatial design, red artificial lighting, and natural light casting sharp shadows. Calmer films feature elevated ceilings, slender openings for natural light, and a suspended projection screen, encouraging relaxation and meditation. The project aims to redefine the cinema experience by actively acknowledging and enhancing audience emotions through dynamic lighting design.

"In this stage set of geologic time, I wanted to make spaces that engage celestial events in light so that the spaces perform a 'music of the spheres' in light."
- James Turrell
