In today's deeply interconnected world, architects often engage in global practices that require sensitivity to unfamiliar contexts. This approach must go beyond mere replication or the imposition of foreign ideas. Instead, architects can utilize their outsider perspective to re-interpret local environments and re-contextualize them on a global scale. The aim is not to build anew but to re-program, re-activate, and regenerate small yet impactful areas within the city.
This project centers on Vallbona, an isolated neighborhood in Barcelona's northern Nou Barris district. The City Council has launched an ambitious plan to transform Vallbona into an innovative agro-ecological hub of metropolitan significance. This transformation seeks to harness the area's unique physical environment, material and immaterial heritage, and ecological values. The plan is organized around four key areas: Connectivity and Mobility, Green Connectors and Agricultural Heritage, Water Heritage, and Housing and Urban Facilities.
The project encompasses three distinct sites: a research institute, a farmland planning initiative, and a pedestrian bridge. Each of these designs will contribute to the overarching goal of revitalizing Vallbona, aligning with the broader vision of creating a sustainable and interconnected urban landscape.
